Off To A Flying Start

Dean Thompson posted Monday October 4, 2010.

Drouin Speedway held their first race meeting of the new season on the weekend of October 3rd with all the regular home track hero’s back in their Standard Saloons along with this week’s visiting racers from the Compact Speedcars and the Wingless Sprints.

The Wingless Sprints who raced the night prior in Geelong will soon be a large category in Gippsland with some 20+ cars from the area now registered to race and will be back at Drouin later in the season. Proceedings got underway in the first heat with Ross Jarred taking the win ahead of hot favourite Dan Dubois and Bairnsdale’s Gary Bowden.

Travis Effern from Inverloch then stepped up to take the win in the second heat with Dubois and Bowden again in the running. The final heat for wingless saw Dubois finally tasting victory with Effern and Leongatha youngster Dayn Bentvelzen snatching a great third.

For the all important feature race Dubois and Effern started off the front and when the race got underway it was Dubois leading early from Jarred and Effern and Jarred. Dubois who had been suffering mechanical gremlins soon lost the lead when his car stopped on the speedway midway through the bottom turns. He went to the back of the field and Effern hit the front and went on to win from Dubois who stormed back from the rear and Jarred.

Compact Speedcars provided plenty of action with 62 year old John Gordon who was making a return, rolling over during hot laps. Whilst he was not badly injured his day was done. Former National champion Danny Stainer won both heats before storming away with the feature win ahead of Jason Crawford and Michael Dickson.

In Standard Saloons Wayne Nelson took out the men’s final after the first car across the line was disqualified for infringing upon the tyre thread rule. Jason Leonard from Dandenong was second with Paul Sheppard in third place.

In Ladies Standards last year’s club champion Anne Gooding from Moe was the first to record victory this season with Sonia Nelson and Mary-Anne Lowe filling in the minor placings and finally in Junior Standards Matt Nelson was a standout winner from Ryan Thomson and Brodie Montague.

In VSC Open Sedans Wayne Nelson took his second win of the day with Sonia Nelson second and no other finishers.

The next race meeting at Drouin will be November 14th with ASCF Juniors on the program for their ‘Out & About’ state series. Karts will return for their first visit of the season along with Standard Saloon Men’s, Ladies and Juniors and VSC Open Sedans.

Chrystie New Junior Standard Victorian Champion

Dean Thompson posted Wednesday June 9, 2010.

The Victorian Speedway Council Junior Standard Saloon Championship originally scheduled for Nyora Speedway on June 6th was run at Drouin Speedway on the same date after weather affected the Nyora complex. Drouin was delighted to have sixteen youngsters put on a great day of racing culminating in a terrific final over 20 laps distance.

Raging favourite, on record at least was Michael Gorman who has a decorated career in 1200cc Junior Sedan racing and a couple of heat victories confirmed him as the driver to beat early in preceedings whilst Cameron Dike, Andrew Miles, Brody Chrystie, Anthony Brennan and John Scandrett all looked like they could challenge come the title race. Lining up in the final with Chrystie alongside, Gorman got the jump early in the feature with Gorman quickly establishing a lead. Local race driver Dike who himself had won a heat race earlier in the day was right in the lead group early until his charge was snuffed out and he headed infield with mechanical defects.

Miles and Brennan who had come forward from deeper in the pack and Dylan Campton had their own stoush going on behind the leaders. A yellow light brought Gorman back to Chrystie as the last restart began and Chrystie was right on the money as he stuck to the Gorman bumper bar. Gorman started to suffer some minor mechanical issues and as the two tried to pass a backmarker Gorman ended up with an excursion through the infield mud whilst Chrystie held on and passed the slower car and roared across the line to victory with John Scandrett, Anthony Brennan, Gorman and Trevor Angus the top five.

A delighted Chrystie spoke of being the new Victorian Champion. “I would like to thank Northern Auto Recyclers for supplying me the race car and Drouin for making sure this event was run this season. I had a great race with Gorman and he was the guy to beat and I was in the right spot at the right time and I’m wrapt. To the other finishers congratulations.”

Visiting category the Street Stocks with drivers from Warrnambool, Simpson, Geelong and even Swan Hill held four heat races with Shane Roycroft and Jason Braddock winning one heat each whilst South Australian champion Brad McClure won the last two heats and topped the qualifying points table. McClure and Shane Roycroft began at the front with the VT Commodore of McClure leading the borrowed Jason Hicks XF Falcon that Roycroft was steering. Whilst Roycroft was close on occasions McClure had the race under control and went on to win ahead of Shane Roycroft, Mark Topperwein, Braddock and John Roycroft.

In Wingless Sprint action Warrnambool’s Brad Warren won two of the three heats with David McKay taking victory in the third. Warren left the start line in a hurry come feature time and McKay hurried him early before Warren stamped his authority on the race. Warren made the long trip worthwhile to win the final with McKay, Adam Greenwood, Gary Bowden and Kris Lacey the top five.

In Men’s Standard Saloon results Victor Benson won the day with Jason Leonard and Wayne Nelson rounding out the top three and Anne Gooding won the ladies from Debbie Donaldson and Sonia Nelson. Visiting Vintage Super Modifieds also made an appearance with Graham Briggs, Ray Lavenders and Jim Duggan crossing the line as the top three.

Cull And Crawford Grinning Winners

Dean Thompson posted Monday May 17, 2010.

A ‘massive’ day of racing at Drouin Speedway was capped off with major victories to David Cull and Jo Crawford and in the latters case two feature victories in the one day!

Some of the best men and ladies Standard Saloon drivers were on hand for the men’s ‘Moe Grain & Farm’ Eliminator Cup and the Ladies ‘Robin Hood Hotel’ feature and the crowd was not disappointed with the day’s action. In fact the feeling amongst those there is they wanted to see more.

Beginning with the last round of heats for the ladies feature that was washed out a fortnight ago Anne Gooding and Tracey Ingram took wins. Two weeks prior the other winners of heats were Charlene Dike, Jo Crawford and Tracey Ingram who won both her heats that day taking a clean sweep of heat wins across the meeting.

The feature lined up with Ingram, Crawford, Angie Miller, Gooding, Melissa Tatterson, Bec Nelson, Charlene Dike, Tegan Bullard, Cindy-Lee Drewery, Britt Langston, Kellie Garlick, Debbie Donaldson, Krystal Leah, Sonia Nelson and Veronica Dike all fired up for the annual event.

Ingram was a standout driver and as she dominated her heats she again set about dominating the feature race with Crawford the best of the rest. It didn’t take Ingram long to catch lapped traffic and she was half a lap in front.

Only disaster could interfere with her winning the event and unfortunately disaster struck. Ingram was right behind some lapped traffic when they made contact leaving her nowhere to go and she tagged the wall and broke her car’s steering. Crawford assumed the lead and with Angie Miller not behind those two put on a great race to lead. Carnage close to the end of the race with car’s crashing right around the track led to the race being declared with Crawford, Miller and Donaldson who charged from twelfth to third the top three.

In men’s action nine heats were run over three rounds and Scott Whittle from Geelong and Rosedale’s David Cull were the top two drivers winning two heats each and coming second in their other heat. Other heat winners were Ben Randall, Ash Fyffe, Jacob Vuillerman, Victor Benson and Jarryd Gleeson.

The line up for the feature was Whittle, Cull, Fyffe, Benson, Randall, Vuillerman, Jason Leonard, Michael Ardley, Gleeson, Wayne Nelson, Ash England, Wayne Thomsen, Chris Mayer, Kellie Garlick, Paul Sheppard, Jason Parsons and Leigh Gooding who stepped into his wife’s race car after his suffered engines damage during his last heat race.

Cut into three race segments to allow for elimination of the back markers as the race went along, the first segment started with Benson looping in between turn three and four and ending his good qualifying work by being sent to the rear. Gooding at the back was making some progress forward whilst Whittle led Cull and Fyffe in the first 8 lap stanza across the line. Benson was amongst those eliminated knocking out a top qualifier.

The grid reformed and Cull was the best of the starters leading Whittle and Fyffe whilst Gleeson had moved forward from ninth. At the end of another 8 laps Kellie Garlick the only lady entrant was eliminated along with Ash England, whilst Cull led the rest to the finish..

Eight drivers then formed for the final twelve laps and it was Whittle who got the jump over Cull and Fyffe was still in the hunt however having major handling issues with the car as he tried to hold onto the top two cars. Lapped traffic played a part with Whittle and Cull needing to work their way by and on lap twelve itself coming out of turn two Leonard and Mayer were having a battle for seventh and eighth when Whittle and Cull came right up behind them. Whittle chose to go low, Cull went high and Whittle got baulked by Leonard and Cull assumed the lead through turn three and four and greeted the chequered flag with Whittle, Fyffe, Gleeson, Ardley and Mayer the top six.

Whittle didn’t look happy however that is racing and all drivers have to pass lapped cars and choose the right line. Whittle displayed his typical sportsmanship by congratulating the winner after protesting to officials failed to change the result.

A delighted David Cull spoke after the event. “I got lucky there was no doubt about that. I was close but I knew Scotty would need to make a mistake for me to win and I got lucky with my line passed lapped traffic, he didn’t. It has been a great month having won the Victorian title and now this and I just loved this concept today. I will be back racing at Drouin for sure.”

In support categories the Junior Standard Saloons feature result was Sean Clegg, John Scandrett and Ryan Thomsen. In Melbourne Mini Sprints it was Kevin Bomford, Craig McCormack and Matt Parsons that completed the top three. In Division 2 Hot Rods Scott Laidlaw defeated Aldo McKinnon and Rob Tatterson whilst in the second Ladies Standard Saloons final which was the scheduled club show race Crawford won from Donaldson and Anne Gooding.

Drouin have one more event on June 6th to close the season out with Street Stocks and Wingless Sprints the feature categories.

Hot Day, Hot Cars, Hot Racing

Dean Thompson posted Wednesday February 3, 2010.

Sunday the 31st of January Drouin Speedway was once again live to the sound of Speedway with the annual ‘Riley Memorial’ for 6 Cylinder Standard Saloons and the ground pounding V8 Hot Rods from the SDAV along with the Division 2 Hot Rods for a round of their ‘Mad Moe’s’ series round. Paul Cadle was impressive as he took out his third straight ‘Riley Memorial’ whilst Phil Jenkins won the SDAV ‘Thunder Down Under’ series round and Andy O’Connell was the man in the right place at the right time when he greeted the chequer flag in Division 2 Hot Rods.

With 6 Heats in the ‘Riley Memorial’ wins went the way of Joseph Lia, Paul Cadle, Jeff Smith, Paul Cadle, Jason Leonard and Ben Brighton in that order before the feature field was determined.

At the front of the field Cadle in the “Ramsdale Wreckers’ XF Falcon took a clear lead increasing the distance each lap. Ben Brighton had a shot at catching Cadle around middle distance however soon his race ended infield. Jason Leonard was strong and moved through the chasing bunch to follow Cadle. Lia and Andrew Dike and Wayne Nelson were on the pace. Cadle though for the third year in a row took the win from Leonard, Lia, Dike and Nelson.

In Division 2 Hot Rods Peter Angus won a very wet first heat after storming from the rear of the field into first and clearing away for the win from Ricky Mills and Rob Tatterson. Alan McKinnon then won the 2nd heat from Jeff Leahy and Scott Laidlaw. Trish Dike took a popular win in the 3rd heat ahead of Daryl Logue and Gordon Angus with Andy O’Connell wining the next ahead of Laidlaw and Tatterson. Laidlaw finally took a heat win in the last with Mills and Gordon Angus in the minor placings before O’Connell became the only driver for the day to win two heats when he placed ahead of Leahy and Dike.

Laidlaw and O’Connell began on the front row of the ‘Mad Moe’s’ feature with Mills and Dike behind. At the first start Laidlaw and Dike got the best of the track and took off from the bunch. O’Connell slipped a little back whilst Leahy jostled with Logue as they moved forward.

Various serious race challengers were unable to finish the race whilst McKinnon in his Monaro pushed forward. Logue was the first major threat to end up infield whilst Laidlaw and Dike crashed on the very last lap leaving O’Connell to take the win from Mills and McKinnon.

The Open Wheel SDAV Hot Rods ran three heats with Dean West from Maryknoll. Phil Jenkins and Kali Hovey the main players when it came to results. In heat one West led from the second lap until the end with Jenkins and Hovey following him. West then led again from the second lap to the end in the second heat with Jenkins and Hovey finishing behind. In the final heat Jenkins took the win ahead of Ray Welsh and West.

The feature was an all the way win to Jenkins when he got the best of the start and led into turn one. West was never far away and on a couple of occasions thought about an outside pass through the turns, however it was Jenkins the winner from West and Hovey.

In V8 Standard Saloons Leigh Gooding took the win from Bruce Bullard and Tegan Bullard. In Juniors Matt Nelson was first ahead of Cameron Dike and Shaun Clegg and in ladies Tegan Bullard won from Sarah Meakins and Anne Gooding.
