This Sunday the Drouin Speedway Club will present their season ending show with club class racing, Division 2 Hot Rods, Limited Sportsman, the hilarious Ramp Racing and a crowd-pleasing Demolition Derby to end the day.
The crowd is anticipated to be large with the interest immense on the Ramp Racing and Demolition Derby, always bringing the crowd a range of emotions, non the least laughter.
Standard Saloon racing will once again bring together a number of local Gippsland stars. The Miles clan from Catani and Warragul, Mark, Chris and Jay, plus Leigh Gooding from Trafalgar East, Jeff and Mitch Blencowe from Bunyip, Chase Ingram in his senior racing debut also from Warragul are all keen to leave with the final victory of the season.
Nathan Miles who in the previous event set new Junior Standard Saloon records, was also fast enough to have set a senior record if in fact he was a senior competitor. He is back to compete with Hunter Carey whose been busy as a Drift racer most of this season, William Hickey, Cooper Irons, Liam Ingram and Grace Evans, whist Brayde Zaal competes at the track for the first time.
The Ladies will also be back in Standard Saloon competition with Ella Sheedy who was third in Open Standard Saloon competition at the previous race meeting doing battle with Bree Walker from Trafalgar, Kate Stuchbery, Kath George, Amanda Pritchett and Liza Sweet. Sheedy is favoured based on the display she gave at the last show, however Walker in particular is serious competition.

Dan and Matthew Hurley from Bairnsdale, all will be keen to get this victory at the long-awaited chance to compete at Drouin. They will be joined by Jayden White, and Sean Axnick and fans will enjoy the variety they bring.
Ramp racing hero’s Brendan Sheedy and Darwin Lee will be leading the likes of Beau Evans, Wayne Gibson and Ella Sheedy in her debut in the class that sees car hit two ramps each time they make their way around the track.

FUN IN THE SUN AS TEMBY, HOVEY. MCDONALD AND MILES WIN AT DROUIN SPEEDWAY
Drouin Speedway put on another terrific motorsport show in West Gippsland with lots of variety and lots of records set on the day amongst the race action. Wingless Sprints competed in their final Eastern Series round of the season, Unlimited Sedans competed in their state series, Hot Rods from the Speedway Drivers Association of Victoria held an aggregate event for their class and local heroes in their Standard Saloons also entertained.
Winners included Chris Temby from the Southeast in Wingless, Kali Hovey from Greater Geelong in her Hot Rod, Chris Miles from Catani in Standard Saloons and Corey McDonald from Wodonga in his Unlimited Sedan.
Wingless Sprint competitors arrived with the biggest field they had assembled at Drouin for some time with three heats per round. Ricky Mills, Jack Regan and Esther Thomson began the day as the top three drivers in with a chance of winning the series and by days end, the result was decided by less than ten points between two of the three.
Bairnsdale racer Dillon Siely began the qualifying leading all the way in the first heat to win. Andrew Coon then set a new ten lap record eclipsing a record Siely set in February this year, his new record stands at 2:48.712 as he won by seven seconds. Series leader entering the day Traralgon based racer Ricky Mills, then won his first race of the day leading from start to finish. In the second round,
Wayne Logue whom had finished last in his first heat then won during his second heat whilst Marcus Fraser finishing in second booked a new one lap record for himself briefly. Chris Temby then won after he led from the green flag to the chequered and he too set a new one lap record that would be beaten again before the end of the day. Closing out all the qualifiers Thomas McDonald from Koo Wee Rup reclaimed his one lap record that he held at the start of the day.
On his way to qualifying for the feature event, Glen Harris then set a new six lap track record In the last chance qualifier. His time of 1:57.545 may sit for a while as it is rare that the class ever runs a six-lap race.
Peter Logue and Andrew Coon then began the twenty-five-lap feature event at the front of the field with Fraser, Siely, Temby, Scott Cole, McDonald, Thomson, Jake Warren, and Regan the top ten of twenty finalists. Coon led the field at the wave of the green. Temby moved to third on lap one as Fraser went high and lost position dropping down to eleventh. On lap seven Temby moved into first, and on lap nine Siely passed Coon into second. Peter Logue moved back into the top three on lap fourteen passing Coon.
The field went seventeen laps without a stoppage before Wayne Logue’s race ended when stewards noticed his side nerf bar broken and sticking out dangerously. Logue moved into second on lap twenty-one and Siely’s run in a podium position ended on lap twenty-two with mechanical issues. Temby would rip around Drouin Speedway smashing the one lap record previously set earlier this season by McDonald before being reset numerous times during this race meeting with a 15.641, that is a massive .776 of a second difference. Temby finishing first ahead of Logue, Coon, Fraser who stormed through the field back to fourth and McDonald.
The series championship came down to just seven points difference between first and second. Ricky Mills winning ahead of Regan with Thomson dropping back through table somewhat after a stoppage for her during the final dropped her to the back of the field. Jake Warren finished in third ahead of Ben Hodge and then Thomson.
In Hot Rod series action, the visiting Speedway Drivers Association of Victoria competed on transponders at Drouin Speedway for what historians are saying was the first time. The fastest heat race of the day was the first in which Drouin racer Andrew Kemp defeated Victorian champion Shannon Meakins. Meakins then won heat number two with Brendan Roberts winning in the third and Daniel Chesterfield also from Drouin making it four winners across four qualifiers when he won the last. Kali Hovey who started on the front row with Meakins, then led every lap of fifteen to win the feature event, her first feature win of the season. Meakins finished in second with Kemp, Roberts and Chesterfield the top five.
Also competing in series action was the Unlimited Sedans. Drouin club member Daryl Nicolson started the day off with a win in the first heat establishing a new eight lap record for the class at 2:54.350. Corey McDonald from Wodonga then won the next two qualifiers setting a new one lap record in the final qualifier of 15.818, before setting a new twelve lap record in the final of 3:25.314. Nicolson finished in second with Anthony McKean third in front of Peter Farley.
Open Standard Saloon competition provided three new records of their own, with a former class Junior from last season, showing the elder statesman the way for two of them. Kane Gibson, and Mark Miles won the first-round qualifiers. Ella Sheedy then defeated her buddy Bryce Leek, both drivers competing in Juniors together until early this season.
Chris Miles won in the second of round two then won again in the first heat of the final round before Sheedy not only set a new ten lap class record, she set a one lap record also on her way to winning a second time in qualifying. Her ten-lap mark set at 3:19.397 and the one lap record at 19.145, putting the young lady in the books as the fastest ever Standard Saloon racer around Drouin recorded on transponder.
Chris Miles then led every lap in the final as he got the better start between, he and Sheedy. The distance of fifteen laps was set about in record pace with Miles having lost the one lap record during the qualifiers claiming a new fifteen lap mark in the final. Mark Miles passed Sheedy on lap thirteen to move into second and at the chequered flag Chris Miles beat Mark Miles, Sheedy, Jeff Blencowe and Jay Miles.
In Junior Standard Saloon racing, the future heroes of the sport were as usual very enthusiastic with Nikolas Pritchett starting his day off strongly in taking victory in heat race number one. Nathan Miles then won the next two, breaking the six-lap track record both times, with a time of 1:57.566 settled as the best, he then went on to win the final by a four second margin ahead of Pritchett and along the way set a new class one lap record of 19.138 with Grace Evans finishing in third place.

HODGE, ANGUS, JOYNSON, BULLARD AND LEEK WIN AT DROUIN
After hard work in the lead up to a Sunday race day at Drouin battling the weather to produce and maintain a racetrack in condition for race competition, the volunteers and officials were delighted to run through a complete race meeting this past Sunday May 19th. President Larry Evans and son Travis and other track maintenance team members delivered a track to hold Wingless and Sedan racing, albeit a tricky one beyond their control with rain still a factor on race day.
In these challenging conditions, the Wingless Sprints competed in four heat races and a final for their Gippsland Wingless Sprint series at Drouin, round six from the scheduled season. Lang Lang based racer Ben Hodge secured a strong win in his first of two races with Jake Warren and Aron Lawrence finishing behind him. Samantha Millar led every lap on her way to victory in heat two with Scott Cole and starting lineup backmarker Tony Moule rounding out the top three. Leongatha racer James Schneider led every lap in heat three winning from Daryl Coon and Scott Irons a Drouin club member. East Gippsland’s Dillon Siely made a couple of early passes to secure a win in the fourth and final heat with Ricky Mills and Hodge the top three.
In a fifteen-lap final with rain closing in on Drouin and already in Pakenham and Nar Nar Goon at the time of feature event racing, Hodge held sway out in the front of the field as Cole having qualified strongly along with Irons holding down second and third. Back in the field starting from row seven, Tony Moule showed all his experience of many years racing and being a former national champion in Sprintcars to work his way past those ahead of him. Ticking off Michael Loxton, Jack Regan, Thomas McDonald, Siely, Schneider, Lawrence, Mills, Warren, Coon, Iron and then Cole on lap fourteen as Hodge crossed the finish line to win, Moule secured second finishing five seconds behind the winner and ahead of Cole, Irons and Warren.
In the Gippsland Cup action for Sports Sedan Andrew Dike started well making passes to take the lead and win the first heat race, before leading from start to finish to win heat two. Dike swept the day when he again led every lap in heat three to win. Dike then looked set for a perfect day as he led from lap one in the feature event. On lap six however his race came to an end and Scott Angus assumed the lead spot. Angus went on to win from Cameron Dike, Chris Aarts, Ray Gould, and Gavan Dorain.
The Junior Standard Saloon drivers continued their development with six drivers in competition. Bunyip racers Cooper Joynson and Ella Sheedy had a great battle in the first heat of the day with Joynson leading most of the race before Sheedy hit the front. Joynson showing how much he has developed this season then retook the lead to finish off with a win. Whilst Sheedy was the winner of heat two, Joynson hassled her all the way to the finish line. Sheedy also won heat number three with Liam Ingram inserting themselves into the mix finishing second this time. Leading every lap of a ten-lap final, Cooper Joynson defeated Sheedy, Ingram, Jackie-Anne Angus, and Ashton Joynson.
Maddi Miles from Catani smashed the field in heat one on the wettest track of the day in heat one of the Ladies Standard Saloons with Bree Walker twenty-one seconds back in second spot at the finish. Tegan Bullard a former club class champion on her return to racing after some time away won the second heat race. Miles won again when she was first to the chequers in heat three. Bullard then led all the way from the front row at the green flag to the finish in winning the final with Miles second then Walker and Tasharni Murray.
Matt Leek returned to victory lane with victory in heat one of the Standard Saloons with Chris Miles taking a win in the second heat after a long drive back from the Murray River on Saturday night where he competed at Wahgunyah. Justin Cadman won heat three leading from start to finish and Leek doubled his heat race wins with another in heat four. Kane Gibson from Traralgon was a winner in heat five with Jeff Blencowe picking up victory in the last qualifier. In the final Leek from the front row held firm as Gibson dropped back through the field as Blencowe, Aaron Cormack and Cadman made passes ahead of him. Blencowe hassled Leek trying to take the lead and when the race was flagged off as finished, Leek had won from Blencowe, Cormack, Cadman, and Gibson.

WINGLESS SPRINTS SET TO FLY AROUND DROUIN SPEEDWAY THIS SUNDAY
Wingless Sprints are scheduled for the second time this season at Drouin Speedway, at what many consider one of the best times of the season to compete at the track which traditionally runs day shows. With the weather usually not extreme heat, the track settles in nicely and the Wingless Sprints set some of their fastest lap times each season. They will be supported by Standard Saloon, Junior Standard Saloon, Sports Sedans, and Ladies Standard Saloon action.
Kicking off at 11am the Wingless Sprint Gippsland Series round has attracted some extraordinarily strong competitors chasing the series and one of visitors just keen to have a skid that should provide terrific racing. Wayne Logue, Scott Irons, Ricky Mills, and Aron Lawrence whom have been great supporters of Wingless racing at Drouin are in the line up and in with a chance of a victory with some of the states best that include Thomas McDonald, Jake Warren, Angus Hollis, Ben Hodge, Dillon Siely, Todd Moule and Brayden McKay to name a few. Drouin race car owner Travis Evans has Angus Hollis and Todd Moule competing for his race team with Todd being the son of long time Drouin member Tony Moule. Tony’s daughter Jade is also in the field and she and Samantha Millar are keen on get a win in front of the lads.
Jeff Blencowe and Leigh Gooding has been one of the great rivalries over the last half a dozen seasons in Gippsland. In particular at Drouin where both drivers figure strongly in the club championship, the two do not give each other an inch in the quest for honours. They will be matched up with the likes of Ashley and Aaron Cormack, Matt Leek, Kane Gibson, and Owen Cecil as they all seek victory for themselves. Anthony Murray, Andy Evans, Garry Charles, and Mark Sweet also represent the host club on Sunday.
Former club champion in Ladies Standard Saloons Tegan Bullard returns to the track to compete after some time away setting up her family with partner Shane. Bullard will find tough competition from Bree Walker in particular whose been terrific in Gippsland this season whilst Maddison Miles, Tasharni Murray and Melissa Van Strien all Drouin members would like nothing more to get the W.
Having reached the end of the season for many racers in what has been a tough year for everybody who’s feeling the financial pinch, the Sports Sedan numbers are low. However, the competitor between Andrew Dike, Ray Gould, Chris Aarts, Drouin’s Gavan Dorain, and rookie Lachlan Pottage should nevertheless be fierce. Dike is the most talented in the field and it would be a big result for somebody to defeat him.
In Junior competition Ella Sheedy, a winner this season In Standard Saloon Juniors is the standout for victory on Sunday, however Cooper Joynson has had a very consistent season with top five results. Grace Evans and Ashton Joynson both still learning the racing caper are also competing.
Gates open from 8:30am. Racing from 11am
Entry will cost $20 for an adult, aged and invalid Pensioner and Children 12 to 16yrs is $15 and Children under 12 years of age are free. A family ticket for two adults and two children aged 12 to 16 will cost $50.
Track is at 140 Main Jindivick Road, Jindivick.

ALBERNI SENSATIONAL WINNER AT DROUIN OPEN SEDAN FEATURE

Under beautiful sky on Sunday January the 17th, Drouin Speedway entertained Gippsland revheads with the running of the ‘Victorian Crane Trucks’ Cup for Open Sedans with Nar Nar Goon racer Jaedn Alberni the big winner as he defeated Morwell’s Daniel Stewart & Michael Suckling from Inverloch in the main race, elsewhere Mark Miles won the Standard Saloon final and Jack Yeomans the Junior Sedans.

The Victorian Speedway Council Open Sedan rules allow drivers with various log books to compete against each other & Drouin was delighted when its very own club member Alberni came out on top in the big feature event to pocket the $500 winner’s prize.

Four heat races were run with Rob Bushell from the South Gippsland based Nyora club taking a win in the first heat whilst both Wayne Alberni & sponsor of the event Jeff Blencowe smashed their cars beyond repair & didn’t see the track again for the rest of the day.

Whilst Stewart crossed the line first in the second heat he was penalised by stewards for a passing move that gave the win to Alberni whilst Bass based racer Wayne Hurford won the third heat race before Stewart finally took a legitimate win in the final heat race.

Alberni started from the front with Hurford for the twenty five lap final that the club prepared very wet for the initial stages of the final. Drivers needed to drive to conditions & the driver to do that the best before the track settled about ten laps in was Alberni.

Hurford lost position, Suckling was second for some time before Stewart who slid off the track and then fought his way through to second place. Hurford was driving under protest after some contact that the stewards deemed impeded another competitor & was later penalised.

Alberni won from Stewart, Suckling & Hans Lovski who was elevated to fourth ahead of Hurford.
After the race Alberni shared his delight. “I am stoked with this result. Thank you to dad so very much for everything he does for my racing. My family & supporters also thank you for everything you do for us also. It was great to win the race with such great competition & to Drouin Speedway & its volunteers well done on giving us a track that we could do so many laps on. I can’t forget the sponsor Victorian Crane Trucks either.”

The Standard Saloons also held four heats with drivers holding Drouin memberships running for club championship points, Mitchell Blencowe, Matt Nelson, Ben Randall & Travis Evans all won heat races whilst the eventual feature race winner was second on three occasions.

Miles then took a great fifteen lap feature win from Chris Charles, Evans, Leigh Gooding & Randall. Jack Yeomans won the Junior Standard Saloon final after AJ Lawrence who won all three heat races agreed to start half a lap behind in the final to give the others a head start. Lawrence unfortunately crashed and Yeomans won ahead of Rhys Lansdown.

Ace of Spades Vintage Speedway Sedan club & the Victorian Speedway Council Super Modifieds performed demonstration runs that were entertaining for the spectators with cars from back in the 1930s to the 1980s having four runs each.

Drouin Speedway returns on the 14th of February with a national Junior Sedan feature event slated to headline along with club classes supporting.

LOCAL RACER WINS ELIMINATOR CUP AT DROUIN SPEEDWAY

Drouin Speedway’s second meeting of the current season has been run & won with local Pakenham racer and Drouin club member Mark Miles winning the clubs biggest annual feature event of the calendar when he was able to out run Traralgon driver Jacob Vuillermin & another Drouin member Cameron Dike in the 24 lap final.

Miles was having his first run of the season & came out on top after a great scrap with Vuillermin seen the two each spend time in the lead with Dike never troubled in third place for his position.

Miles once in the lead himself, spent some time comfortably in front and other moments being hounded by Vuillermin.

After his win Miles had a couple of words to say. “Thank you to every body that has helped in the off season & today. With out you all, winning is much harder to achieve. Thank you for the great competition Jacob & congratulations to the other place getters. We will enjoy this early season win & look forward to great competition in the state point score this season.”

Heat wins earlier went to Mitch Blencowe, Mick Lovell, Dike, Russell Hill, and Vuillermin & Miles whilst race chances at the start of the day Col Yeomans, Brad Hill & Russell Hill & later Lovell were all victims of crashes or mechanical issues & didn’t make the final at all.

The Junior Standard Saloon racing was great with Matt Bowers, Gemma Laidlaw & Jack Yeomans all taking heat wins before Bowers defeated Yeomans & Laidlaw in the final.

The Vintage Super Modifieds that included some quality machinery from days gone sounded beautiful with their mostly V8 power plants. Jim Duggan was the day’s favourite in an old American Sprint whilst in Unlimited Sedans Peter Angus snatched a win over Mick Evans on the very last lap and last corner when he drove turn four better after putting pressure on Evans to go wide.

Racing returns to Drouin December 13th with Mini Sprints & a Junior Standard Saloon series feature.

Drouin Speedway Club opened their season on a fantastic warm spring day where 700 motorsport enthusiasts on the 18th of October with the Victorian Crash & Bash Association the head act producing a great forty lap final that seen plenty of hits dished out as Jason McKendry went on to victory.

Standard Saloons, Junior Standard Saloons & the Ace of Spades Vintage Sedans were great supports to the Crash & Bash show with Jeff Blencowe being awarded the Standard Saloon win whilst Matt Bowers took out the Junior Standards with the Ace of Spades being a demonstration event only.

Nine heat races were won by Rob Disher, Jason McKendry, Peter Cox, Craig McKendry, Jason McKendry, Shannon Mair, Cox, Craig McKendry & Glen Bosanko.

With Cox & Jason McKendry qualifying on the front row, it did not take long before cars found themselves in trouble in this contact racing division. Jason McKendry led the race with Disher & Lennie Bonnici amongst those chasing him.

Ricky Born & Daniel Wanders were amongst those causing mayhem whilst Brad Warren, James Kane, Bosanko & Mair were battling amongst themselves trying to get closing to the leaders.

Jason McKendry even had contact with his brother Craig towards the end of the race before Jason took the win from Kane, Mair, Craig McKendry & Disher.

After winning two of the three heats in Junior Standard Saloons, Matt Bowers went on to defeat Gemma Laidlaw in the Junior Standard Saloon final with Jack Yeomans in third place. Laidlaw was also a heat race winner earlier.

In the Standard Saloons Jeff Blencowe, Travis Evans & Leigh Gooding took wins in the heat races before Gooding led from start to finish in the final in his test spec race car which meant he is excluded from official feature race placings. Jeff Blencowe who chased Gooding from the start then was announced the winner from Chris Charles, Mitch Blencowe, Andrew Morris & Andy Hedges.

The Ace of Spades club were very entertaining with their machinery from the 30s through to 60s & with results not mattering to anybody at all Drouin Speedway Club decided to award a trophy to their three favourite cars for the day. Darren Newton, Col Chadwick & Jenny Akkers took out those awards.

The ‘Open’ Wingless competition which allowed the guys a run & women to run against them, finished in victory to Travis Millar giving Team Millar sister & brother a great day’s results with two podiums, whilst Cranbourne’s Warrick Taylor finished second ahead of Wayne Hurford, Jack Day & Adin Robertson.
