RACING & THE RAIN: THE RAIN WON AFTER QUALIFYING WAS DONE

On Sunday (12th of February) Drouin Speedway were in a race against the predicted rain trying to get the Victorian Championship for Division 2 Hot Rod’s completed and the rain came in and won, however not before qualifying heats were completed setting the field for the championships which will now conclude on March the 18th on a race meeting that also includes the Victorian SDAV Hot Rod Championship.

With six heats run to settle the starting order for the championship race it didn’t start well for Jimmy Low who ploughed into the wall on the back straight ripping out his front end leaving the wheel 30 metres back on the race track in heat one. Scotty Laidlaw one of the favoured drivers for the day took the win ahead of Toby Callanan and Rob Tatterson before Stephen Severs was able to take a win in the next heat over defending state champion Daryl Logue and Jeff Smith.

In round two a great five car battle between Gordon Angus, John Dike Jnr, Laidlaw, Andrew Galley and Jeff Smith became a four way tussle when Smith slammed the front straight wall ripping off his front right tyre and damaging his front end much in the same manner as Low earlier. Dike Jnr took the win from Laidlaw and Galley who missed the first heat when he couldn’t get the thermostat housing fixed in time. Callanan won the second heat from Logue and Ricky Mills who missed the first heat of the day when the power steering line let go on his car waiting on the dummy grid.

Logue then took a win in heat two whilst a heated battle spilling over from niggling in the previous heat between Aldo McKinnon and Dike Jnr ended after the race with second placed McKinnon being black flagged and dropped from the results when he and Dike Jnr had contact with each other. Dike Jnr was elevated to second with Angus in third. Galley then won the final heat from Tatterson and Laidlaw in what in comparison was a un-eventful heat.

With the feature to be now run at the next meeting after rain destroyed track conditions after the third round of heats the field should they choose to come back will line up in the following order. Daryl Logue on pole (current Vic Champion) the Scott Laidlaw, Toby Callanan (Current Vic # 3), John Dike Jnr, Stephen Severs, Rob Tatterson, Andrew Galley, Gordon Angus, Justin Smith, Wes Jasper, Jeff Smith (Current Vic 2), Ricky Mills, Aldo McKinnon and Michael Kruschel.

Winners on points in the support classes including Tegan Bullard from Mary-Anne Lowe and Charlene Dike in the Ladies Standard Saloons. Ben Randall from Wayne Nelson and Polly Perkins in the Open Standards Saloons and Adrian Clarke from Jayde Aarts and Matt Nelson in the Open Sedans.

MICK CHRYSTIE WINS RILEY MEMORIAL AT DROUIN SPEEDWAY

On a very hot Sunday afternoon on January the 29th Mick Chrystie took a big win when he won the annual ‘Riley’s Memorial’ for 6 Cylinder Standard Saloons leading a strong field including last year’s winner Mark Miles whilst on the same program the visiting V8 Hot Rod’s entertained with Jason Kavanagh coming out on top at feature time.

Earlier in heat racing for the Standard Saloons Wayne Nelson, Ben Randall, Chrystie and Brendan Miles had the four winning results which determined starting positions for the twenty lap final. Chrystie was top qualifier with Nelson, Randall and Brendan Miles filling the top four start positions whilst Debbie Donaldson started in fifth place with Jacob Vuillerman alongside her and determined local racer Dale Morrison racing for his step daughter who was in the Royal Children’s Hospital recovering from surgery.

The Speedway had the sun belting down upon it on Sunday and this made conditions tough, water from the damn had been drained out over the week with numerous 30 degree days leading upto the event and again on race day and dust finally won the day but not before Chrystie defeated Nelson, Vuillerman, Randall and Donaldson who made up the first five finishers.

Phil Jenkins & Jason Kavanagh took heat wins in the Hot Rods before Kavanagh took a all the way win in the feature race at the venue which will run their Victorian Championship in March. Allen Luckett past Jenkins and took second whilst Jenkins held off local racer Dean West for third place with Jason May back in fifth.

All categories elected to miss round three heats races to try to save water, however the water run out before any other feature race could be run. Winners were then done on points for the day with Scott Laidlaw winning Division 2 Hot Rods, Ryan Thomson the Junior Sedans, Jason Leonard the V8 Standards, Wayne Nelson the Open Sedans and Donaldson the Ladies Standards.

On February the 12th racing returns to the venue with the Division 2 Hot Rod Victorian Championship along with club classes the Open Sedans, Open Standard Saloons, Juniors and Ladies Standards.

DAN STEWART WINS ELIMINATOR CUP AT DROUIN SPEEDWAY

A big day of entertainment excited motorsport fans at Drouin Speedway on Sunday the 18th of December when Morwell’s Daniel Stewart held off Geelong’s Scott Whittle and Moe’s Leigh Gooding in the big paying Standard Saloon feature on a day where the Standard’s shared top billing with Open Sedans and Vintage Sedans.

In Standard Saloons each driver competed in 3 heats to determine their starting position for the feature where after the initial 8 laps the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th place cars are eliminated before the field starts again for another 8 laps before eliminating 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th place cars leaving 8 drivers to battle the last twelve laps to win the money.

Shane Ardley got the day started with a win before Chris Stewart won the second heat of the day. Daniel Stewart and Jacob Vuillerman won the second round heats before Chris Stewart and Gooding closed out the qualifying by winning the last couple heats.

Daniel Stewart then led each section of the feature race initially with his brother Chris Stewart and Leigh Gooding close behind before Whittle got past Gooding and Chris Stewart dropped out. Dan Stewart had Whittle closer to him in the final 12 lap section of the 28 lap feature yet got away when he needed to a popular win from Whittle, Gooding, Jacob Vuillerman, Patrick Vuillerman, Matt Nelson, Alan Danks and Andrew Miles who were the last 8 men standing.

In Sports Sedans Matt Nelson took out the win in the first heat and the second before Brad Lunn snatched the final heat of the day. Nelson was the stand out driver and lead easily for much of the feature before beating his father Wayne to the finish line with David Cherry in third place.

The Vintage Sedans thrilled the crowd especially Bob ‘The Gnome’ Maloney in his 1936 Chev Sloper who won his first heat from the front and then roared through the pack in the other two heats finishing second before winning the feature after starting from the rear of the pack in front of Pete ‘The Aggravator’ Quaife in his 1934 Ford Coupe and Johnny ‘B Good’ Watson.

Debbie Donaldson won the ladies in front of Kellie Garlick and Sonia Nelson whilst Ryan Thomson was too strong for Brodie Montague and Steven Danks in Junior Standard Saloons. Bob Tatterson won all three heats and the feature for Division 2 Hot Rods with Wes Jasper finishing second and no other car finishing the feature.

Racing returns over two days in January to the venue with the Yarra Valley Speedway Kart Club taking charge of the venue on the 7th whilst the Drouin Speedway Club operate the venue on the 8th with the Goulburn Ovens Sports Sedan Victorian Championship, Wingless Sprint 500 & Victorian Mini Sprintcars to spice up the program that will have all the clubs regular classes.

DROUIN SPEEDWAY ENTERTAINMENT PROVIDED BY MILES AND WILLIAMS

In what was essentially a club only program, Mark Miles and Sam Williams took out entertaining features races in their categories at Drouin Speedway on Sunday November 13th on a day that was supposed to bucket down with rain. The rain held off to keep the fans happy.

In Open Standard Saloons Shane Ardley, Miles and Wayne Tooze took wins in the three heats before Miles and Ardley began at the front of the feature field. Miles was fantastic with challenges from Ardley then Wayne Nelson, Miles brought his novelty race car painted as a Melbourne Taxi home first with Nelson getting the better of Ardley and Chris Leonard in fourth just ahead of Brendan Miles.

In Open Sedans Matt Nelson a first time senior racer won the first heat with Jayde Aarts the second and Nelson the last. Consistency from Williams qualified him in first with Nelson alongside. Williams and Nelson had the lead early in the race before Nelson suffered car damage and dropped back in the field. Williams took out his first Open Sedan feature win from Brad Lunn and Sonia Nelson.

Junior 1200 Sedans was a runaway win to Donald Young with Shona Bent and Tyler Barton completing the podium and Debbie Donaldson won the ladies beating Anne Gooding and Sonia Nelson.

DROUIN SPEEDWAY SEASON BEGINS WITH NELSON AND DUBOIS WINS

Despite the threat of rain and a couple sprinkles during the day Drouin Speedway managed to complete the first meeting of the new Speedway season on Sunday with the visiting Wingless Sprints providing a ripper of a final and the Nelson family through husband and wife Wayne & Sonia taking victories in 3 features races on the day.

In Wingless Sprint action three heats were run to determine the starting positions for the feature and Ross Jarred from Mirboo North took a win in the first heat of the day in front of Melbourne’s Dan Dubois and Luke Cole all the way from Terang. Bairnsdale driver Gary Bowden collected a looped Michael Cunningham and ripped out his front end and failed to complete the heat.

Justin Barton won the second heat in front of Cole and Dubois in a heat highlighted by a spectacular crash.

Cunningham looped in turn two finding it difficult to come to grips with the race surface in that turn and Pete Laity slammed into and over the top of him with both cars ending up on their side and damaged.

Cunningham then won the final heat from the front row leading Cole and Jarred across the finish line.

The feature race over fifteen laps was almost a great win to Ross Jarred. He led the first ten laps before Dubois got underneath him in turn four and took off to lead the last five laps to the finish. Barton was third with Cole and Bowden rounding out the top five.

In Open Standards Wayne Nelson won in front of Shane Ardley and Chris Leonard in heat one before Leigh Gooding was declared the winner of the second heat in a close across the line finish with Brendan Miles who was judged to have cut a pole line and hit a competitor before he was penalised. So Wayne Thomson was given second behind Gooding and then Miles. Nelson then won the third heat beating Dale Morrison in a Nelson team car whilst he continues to finish rebuilding his own after an accident in August with Brendan Miles in third.

Nelson lead all the way in the final littered with numerous stoppages as drivers scrambled to get to the front with Ardley finishing second then Wayne Tooze, Brendan Miles and Chris Leonard.

In Ladies Standard Saloons Sonia Nelson finished in front of Tegan Bullard and Anne Gooding in the final and in Junior Standards Ryan Thomson finished in front of Brodie Montague whilst Shona Bent won the 1200cc race in her first ever Junior Speedway Sedan event.

In the final category of the day Wayne Nelson won the Open Sedan feature from Sonia Nelson and brother Darren Nelson in a family clean sweep.

Magor Takes A Major Win

Dean Thompson posted Monday January 10, 2011.

What a ‘Big Big’ Sunday it was at Drouin Speedway on the 9th of January with the Standard Saloons stealing the show with the completion of the ‘Moe Grain & Farm’ Eliminator Cup in which Mount Beauty’s Matt Magor came home the winner after 28 gruelling laps.

Top Victorian driver Ash Fyfe and current Victorian Champion David Cull began the feature at the front of the field with Magor behind them and a full field right down to 16th on the grid. In the Eliminator where the aim in is to avoid being in the last four on track when each of the first two segments is finished in order to still be in the event for the big money race Magor found himself at the back of the field after being deemed to have caused a stoppage in the early laps of the first segment.

The feature field was Fyfe, Cull, Magor, Jarryd Gleeson, Mark Miles, Jason Parsons, Jason Leonard, Dale Morrison, Wayne Nelson, Joseph Leah, Ben Brighton, Brad Brighton, Sam McGill, Andrew Morris, Shane Adlam and Kellie Garlick.

Magor managed to avoid elimination by passing some cars at the re-start and went through to the second segment. Fyfe soon fell victim to mechanical issues and pulled infield whilst Drouin’s best performing club member Gleeson also pulled infield dur to damage. In the last segment Victorian Champion Cull parked his car infield with overheating and Morrison became a man with a chance to win. Morrison punched the wall with his car and Magor hit the front and led home Drouin’s Nelson and Parsons from Rosedale and Morris from Drouin as the only four to finish the gruelling 28 laps.

Magor was rapt to win. “I don’t know what to say right now. I made a mistake early, went to the rear and still find myself with the win. Bad luck to those that couldn’t finish the race and thank you to Leigh and Anne Gooding for sponsoring this event it was a ball of fun and I will be back next year.”

Wingless Sprints raced another round of the Gippsland ‘Victory Lane Racegear’ Gippsland Challenge and it was Dan Dubois who was successful over David McKay who won the night before at Bairnsdale Speedway and Gary Bowden who has been having a consistent run this season through the series.

Craig Ansell defeated Robbie Dennison and David Dennison in Limited Sportsman. There was plenty of Speedway Karts on hand to compete and in Division 1 Juniors jack King, Luke Hickson and Jamie Gourlay were the top three and in Division 2 Juniors Casey Garlick won from Chris Temby and Dillon Ghent.

Outlaw Kart victory went to a dominate Michael Van Ginneken the current South Australian # 1 who blasted the field beating Rex Gourlay and Sue Lindell whilst former V8 Supercar star Darren Hossack won all three heats and the final to win the KT 100 on the day. Van Ginneken was second in the KT’s with Zoe Telindert third.

Vintage Super Modifieds thrilled fans from yesteryear with spirited demonstrations and Graeme Briggs, Jim Duggan and Peter Swandale completed the top three at the end of the day and the Standard Saloons finished the club points section of their day with Leigh Gooding winning the final from Cull and Morrison.

Racing returns to Drouin on January the 30th with the annual ‘Rileys Memorial’ for 6 Cylinder Standard Saloons plus Speedway Karts, Crash N Bash and club classes including Ladies Standard Saloons and VSC Open Sedans.

Rain Ruins Eliminator Cup

Dean Thompson posted Monday December 13, 2010.

Victoria’s persistent rain ruined Drouin Speedway on Sunday the 12th of December when racing was finally halted at 3pm after a heavy downpour ending hopes of being able to complete the Moe Grain and Farm ‘Eliminator Cup’ for Standard Saloons.

Six heats were completed with David Cull the current Victorian Champion, Drouin club members Jason Leonard and Wayne Nelson winning the round one heats and Brad Brighton, Ash Fyffe and Matt Magor winning the second round heats.

After round two Cull, Fyffe and Magor are the top three in points with sixteen to qualify for the feature at January the 9ths meeting.

Division 2 Hot Rods were running the Mad Mile Motors series Round one and they were able to get 3 heats of 4 run before rain ended the day. Alan McKinnon, Gordon Angus and Scott Laidlaw won the three heats.
