RACING & THE RAIN: THE RAIN WON AFTER QUALIFYING WAS DONE

On Sunday (12th of February) Drouin Speedway were in a race against the predicted rain trying to get the Victorian Championship for Division 2 Hot Rod’s completed and the rain came in and won, however not before qualifying heats were completed setting the field for the championships which will now conclude on March the 18th on a race meeting that also includes the Victorian SDAV Hot Rod Championship.

With six heats run to settle the starting order for the championship race it didn’t start well for Jimmy Low who ploughed into the wall on the back straight ripping out his front end leaving the wheel 30 metres back on the race track in heat one. Scotty Laidlaw one of the favoured drivers for the day took the win ahead of Toby Callanan and Rob Tatterson before Stephen Severs was able to take a win in the next heat over defending state champion Daryl Logue and Jeff Smith.

In round two a great five car battle between Gordon Angus, John Dike Jnr, Laidlaw, Andrew Galley and Jeff Smith became a four way tussle when Smith slammed the front straight wall ripping off his front right tyre and damaging his front end much in the same manner as Low earlier. Dike Jnr took the win from Laidlaw and Galley who missed the first heat when he couldn’t get the thermostat housing fixed in time. Callanan won the second heat from Logue and Ricky Mills who missed the first heat of the day when the power steering line let go on his car waiting on the dummy grid.

Logue then took a win in heat two whilst a heated battle spilling over from niggling in the previous heat between Aldo McKinnon and Dike Jnr ended after the race with second placed McKinnon being black flagged and dropped from the results when he and Dike Jnr had contact with each other. Dike Jnr was elevated to second with Angus in third. Galley then won the final heat from Tatterson and Laidlaw in what in comparison was a un-eventful heat.

With the feature to be now run at the next meeting after rain destroyed track conditions after the third round of heats the field should they choose to come back will line up in the following order. Daryl Logue on pole (current Vic Champion) the Scott Laidlaw, Toby Callanan (Current Vic # 3), John Dike Jnr, Stephen Severs, Rob Tatterson, Andrew Galley, Gordon Angus, Justin Smith, Wes Jasper, Jeff Smith (Current Vic 2), Ricky Mills, Aldo McKinnon and Michael Kruschel.

Winners on points in the support classes including Tegan Bullard from Mary-Anne Lowe and Charlene Dike in the Ladies Standard Saloons. Ben Randall from Wayne Nelson and Polly Perkins in the Open Standards Saloons and Adrian Clarke from Jayde Aarts and Matt Nelson in the Open Sedans.
