What a ‘Big Big’ Sunday it was at Drouin Speedway on the 9th of January with the Standard Saloons stealing the show with the completion of the ‘Moe Grain & Farm’ Eliminator Cup in which Mount Beauty’s Matt Magor came home the winner after 28 gruelling laps.
Top Victorian driver Ash Fyfe and current Victorian Champion David Cull began the feature at the front of the field with Magor behind them and a full field right down to 16th on the grid. In the Eliminator where the aim in is to avoid being in the last four on track when each of the first two segments is finished in order to still be in the event for the big money race Magor found himself at the back of the field after being deemed to have caused a stoppage in the early laps of the first segment.
The feature field was Fyfe, Cull, Magor, Jarryd Gleeson, Mark Miles, Jason Parsons, Jason Leonard, Dale Morrison, Wayne Nelson, Joseph Leah, Ben Brighton, Brad Brighton, Sam McGill, Andrew Morris, Shane Adlam and Kellie Garlick.
Magor managed to avoid elimination by passing some cars at the re-start and went through to the second segment. Fyfe soon fell victim to mechanical issues and pulled infield whilst Drouin’s best performing club member Gleeson also pulled infield dur to damage. In the last segment Victorian Champion Cull parked his car infield with overheating and Morrison became a man with a chance to win. Morrison punched the wall with his car and Magor hit the front and led home Drouin’s Nelson and Parsons from Rosedale and Morris from Drouin as the only four to finish the gruelling 28 laps.
Magor was rapt to win. “I don’t know what to say right now. I made a mistake early, went to the rear and still find myself with the win. Bad luck to those that couldn’t finish the race and thank you to Leigh and Anne Gooding for sponsoring this event it was a ball of fun and I will be back next year.”
Wingless Sprints raced another round of the Gippsland ‘Victory Lane Racegear’ Gippsland Challenge and it was Dan Dubois who was successful over David McKay who won the night before at Bairnsdale Speedway and Gary Bowden who has been having a consistent run this season through the series.
Craig Ansell defeated Robbie Dennison and David Dennison in Limited Sportsman. There was plenty of Speedway Karts on hand to compete and in Division 1 Juniors jack King, Luke Hickson and Jamie Gourlay were the top three and in Division 2 Juniors Casey Garlick won from Chris Temby and Dillon Ghent.
Outlaw Kart victory went to a dominate Michael Van Ginneken the current South Australian # 1 who blasted the field beating Rex Gourlay and Sue Lindell whilst former V8 Supercar star Darren Hossack won all three heats and the final to win the KT 100 on the day. Van Ginneken was second in the KT’s with Zoe Telindert third.
Vintage Super Modifieds thrilled fans from yesteryear with spirited demonstrations and Graeme Briggs, Jim Duggan and Peter Swandale completed the top three at the end of the day and the Standard Saloons finished the club points section of their day with Leigh Gooding winning the final from Cull and Morrison.
Racing returns to Drouin on January the 30th with the annual ‘Rileys Memorial’ for 6 Cylinder Standard Saloons plus Speedway Karts, Crash N Bash and club classes including Ladies Standard Saloons and VSC Open Sedans.
