3 Litre Sedans Assist Fire Affected Drouin Speedway

Dean Thompson posted Sunday March 1, 2009.

When the Black Saturday Bushfires wreaked havoc on Victoria, Gippsland was in the line of fire and like everybody else the Drouin Speedway community has been affected. Drouin Speedway received substantial damage to its property as the fires burnt through some of the spectator viewing area and the competitor pit enclosure aswell as damaging wiring essential to the facilities, some fencing and pipes.

On Sunday March 15th local drivers come together with drivers from the 3 Litre Sedan, ASCF Junior Sedans and the Mini Sprintcar communities to hold a race meeting with the aim of raising funds through participation and crowd attendance that can contribute to repairing what has been damaged or replacing those things that are now lost as a result of the fires.

The 3 Litre Drivers will be well represented with local legend and committee member Russell Hill and his son Nick Hill both intending to compete along with Jeff and Greg Leahy of the Drouin Speedway Club. Other drivers are expected to come from Pakenham and surrounding areas and as far as Ballarat.

With the original idea to compete being made by Ballarat identity Jack McClure, DMT Media have got involved and are offering the first place prize and have created the race format. The event to be called ‘The Intimidator’ will offer trophy’s to the first three places and the driver with the most points in the heats will start at the rear of the field in the feature and also choose three drivers to start down the back with them to create an exciting feature of the fast cars working their way from the back to the front.

Also on the program the Mini Sprintcars will hold their delayed ‘Christmas Cup’ which was abandoned at a earlier rain affected race date and ASCF Junior Sedans including Australia # 2 and Warragul resident Ty Galley and friend and fellow top of the ladder race driver Mitch Whiting.

The Standard Saloons for Mens. Ladies and Juniors along with the Speedway Karts will also fill the program for any family looking for something to entertain them on Sunday.

Competitors need to be in the pits by 10am and racing begins at 11am. Nominations are still being accepted by Mat on 0419321722.

Prices for admission are $40 for a family of 2 adults and two kids between 12-16, $15- for Adult, $10 for Age/Invalid pensioner and kids 12-16yrs old.
