STEWART & DANKS WIN BIG RACES AT DROUIN SPEEDWAY

Sprintcars & Sedans headlined Drouin Speedway’s latest race meeting on January the 19th with the annual 6 Cylinder Standard Saloon ‘Robin Hood Cup’ feature the co-major event with the ‘LV Core & Saw’ Junior Standard Saloon series round whilst the Victorian Speedway Council Vintage Sprintcars and Super Modifieds put smiles on the faces of many with amongst them an ex Brooke Tatnell & ex Max Dumesny race cars driven by their proud

The ‘Robin Hood Cup’ ran four heats before the field for the feature was set in starting order. Local Drouin youngster Travis Evans would get his day under way with a win in the first heat before Dale Morrison won the next two heats. Morrison was due to compete in the final heat of the day however his car was trashed during a heat of the Junior Standards when his daughter Ally Morrison was involved in a crash that sent the car into the wall front on, the car didn’t race the rest of the day. Evans won the last heat.

With no Morrison in the final Evans and Daniel Stewart began at the front of the field for the final and Stewart hit the lead straight away and despite all sorts of action going on behind him, was never caught or passed. Evans and Mark Miles whilst second and third were sent to the rear of the field after an on track incident deemed Miles the cause of a Evans spin and Evans pinged for unsafe re-entry onto the race track. Stewart cruised to his win with Miles and Evans both working their back into second and third places followed by Andrew Suckling & Bunyips Jeff Blencowe in his debut race finishing fifth.

In the Junior Standard Saloon ‘LV Core & Saw’ series round a healthy field of fourteen made their way to Drouin to contest round three of a four round series around Gippsland. In the first of four heats after having the front end of his car written off at the last race meeting at Drouin, Josh Thomas returned to take victory in the first heat of the day. Steve Danks then won his first heat in the second heat with Victorian Champion Tyson Cull rounding out the heats by returning after damage to his car stopped him from finishing his first heat to win the third and fourth heats.

With a cracking field of talented youngsters up the front of the field including Thomas, Danks & Cull and with Michael Suckling, Ty Hutton, AJ Lawrence & Cooper Cappellari all at the front end of the field the race could have gone any way however it was Rosedale tearaway Danks that asserted his authority on the tricky Drouin venue as he hit the lead and never looked like being passed. Danks held firm for the win over Cull, Traralgon’s Thomas, Inverloch racer Suckling and Lawrence.

The Drouin Speedway Classic for 1200cc Junior Sedans attracted a few Alexandra Speedway Club members keen for a run since their venue is closed due to fire season. Caleb Lincoln was able to take all three heat victories with Grantville’s Seth Bent challenging in every one before Lincoln went on to win the Classic from Bent, Wayne Furmston, Ricky Cornwell & Zoe Young.

In the Classic Sprintcar demonstrations it doesn’t really matter who crosses the finish line first. Watching the classic 1988 Sprintcar that Brooke Tatnell used to run in the hands of Queenslander Leigh Drennan and the 1982 John Sidney Racing ex Max Dumesny car being driven by Brett Howe & Tom Chandler both of New South Wales was an absolute thrill. Drennan especially gave the machine a fair old squirt especially in the first demonstration and proved once and for all that Drouin Speedway does handle Sprintcars.

Gary Hamblin who crossed the finish line first in the final demonstration in his ex Roy Wright owned and driven race car along with Drennan, Howe, Chandler & Paul Woodgate in his imported American former champ race car all thrilled the spectators in their spectacular machines.

In Vintage Super Modifieds the forerunner to the Sprintcars it was a bit of a mixed bag for the likes of Graeme Briggs and Jim Duggan on track whilst Howard Colwell continued his love of racing at Drouin by crossing the finish line in the final demonstration first and in one piece. John Watson & Bob Noonan were two others who had fun on the day with Watson really getting stuck into things no matter where he started.

The next race meeting at Drouin Speedway is February the 9th and will include the Vic Mini Sprints Gold Cup series round, the Vintage club once again, the third and final round of the Open Standard Saloon track championship series and tentatively the Ladies Sedans, Open Sedans, Junior 1200 Sedans & Junior Standard Saloons.

MCKEE THE NEW QUEEN AT DROUIN SPEEDWAY NEW YEARS SHOW

Drouin Speedway filled race fans with new years cheer with their annual just after New Years race program and on a program that included all the regular divisions and the visiting SDAV Hot Rods nobody left disappointed with the action before the rain closed the show.

The Ladies Standard Saloons showed up in great numbers considering their Victorian Title is to be run in a few weeks time and the win went to Kinglake’s Alaina McKee as she held off a determined Tegan Bullard, Di Meakins, Sarah Meakins & Sonia Nelson across the finish line in the final.

McKee was crowned the first ever ‘Queen of the Quarry’ having won the event that had attracted ten racers. Earlier heat races were won by Melissa Kairys, Trish Dike & McKee.

The visiting V8 Sdav Hot Rod class were racing their second round of the season and it was western suburbs racer Andrew Howard who made a last lap first corner pass to the outside of then race leader Maryknoll’s Dean West to head to the line and take the win with Phil Jenkins, Shannon Meakins and Russ Hovey completing the top five. West almost doubled up on winning at Drouin after winning here last season until the last lap pass by Howard. Traffic on his line may have been the difference here as Howard made a risky outside pass to get by West.

Earlier heat races went the way of Howard, Kali Hovey & Jenkins.

The Standard Saloons were running for the Gippy Shield trophies whilst the Gippy Shield for this race meeting was a combination of Men, Ladies & Junior Standard Saloon competitors competing as teams. With no final due to rain the Standard Saloon results were determined on the qualifying race points. Victor Benson from Nar Nar Goon took the win from Drouin’s Travis Evans both of whom took earlier heat race wins & Mitchell Bowyer.

The Gippy Shield was won by the following team members. Phil McNeil, Travis Evans, Steve Dadswell, Tegan Bullard, Di Meakins, Anne Gooding, Jack Yeomans, Michael Suckling & Steve Danks.

The VSC Sedans raced for the Track Championship round two. Heat race wins went the way of Labertouche racer Joel Andrews and Matt Nelson who won the next two. Nelson also won the final ahead of Mick Evans & Jaden Alberni.

The second round of the Junior Standard Saloon track championship was a hard fought affair across the day. Unfortunately for front running driver Joshua Thomas his car ended up wrecked during the day allowing Steven Danks to consolidate in the championship lead. Victorian Champion Tyson Cull took the win from Danks, Dylan Pendlebury, Michael Suckling & Ally Morrison.

Cull, Danks & Cull again won the three heat races.

The Division 2 Hot Rods competed in their second round of their track championship with Galley taking the win after Mills got stuck behind lapped traffic late in the race. Second went the way of Scott Laidlaw & Rob Tatterson was third.

Mills, Galley & Toby Callanan were the heat race winners.

The national body SSA Juniors also had their feature race washed out. Heat race winner were Seth Bent, Dean Burton & Tyler Barton with the overall points on the day across three heats determining the overall placings. Grantville’s Bent was the winner on the day ahead of Jack Van Breman and Barton.

The next meeting at Drouin Speedway will be on the 19th of January with the visiting Vintage Super Modifieds on the program along with the 6 Cylinder Standard Saloon feature, The Flower Cup for Ladies, Final Round of the VSC Sedan track championship, SSA Junior Sedan Traders Derby & Junior Standard Saloon round three of the LV Core & Saw series.

STEWART BACK TO BACK IN ELIMINATOR CUP, FERGUSON WINS MIGHTY MOUSE MAGIC

Drouin Speedway had a huge day of racing on Sunday the 8th of December with the annual Eliminator Cup for Standard Saloons leading a show packed with important race events including the Mighty Mouse Magic for Mini Sprints & the beginning of track championships for Division 2 Hot Rods, VSC Sedans & Junior Standard Saloons.

The Standard Saloons had the best of inform drivers from around Gippsland including Morwell’s Chris Stewart who had won a race meeting the night before at Rosedale Speedway. Competition included Mark Miles, Leigh Gooding from Trafalgar East, Jacob Vuillermin & Matt Nelson.

In three rounds of heats each driver round was split into three races. Devlin Saunders, Stewart & Nelson won the first round heat races. Stewart, Miles (from Pakenham) & Gooding took out the wins in the second round. The final heats dished up a welcome surprise with Michael Esparon taking a commanding win ahead of Gooding in the first of the heats before Vuillermin & Victor Benson rounded out qualifying.

The Latrobe Waste Recyclers Eliminator Cup’s unique format has all starters running eight laps all trying to get into or stay in the top twelve. Then drivers change race direction and the twelve remaining drivers try to finish in the top eight over the next eight laps. The final eight run for the money and the win and Stewart was just unstoppable getting to the front early in the race and controlling it from start to finish to take a win from Miles, Gooding, Vuillermin & Ash England who had a strong day with a great finish.

Stewart was gracious in winning. “Thank you to Drouin Speedway Club, the sponsor and everybody involved with my race team. It is always great to win and much better to win in front of those people that mean the most to me. Well done to Mark & Leigh on their results also.”

The Division 2 Hot Rod track championship got under way with enthusiastic drivers determined to get a great start in the three round series. Andrew Galley, Morwell’s Scott Laidlaw & Ricky Mills took heat wins in round one supported by Allman’s Fencing Traralgon before the drivers lined up for the feature race. The feature was a shoot out between Traralgon’s Mills & Laidlaw whilst Galley didn’t get to start the final due to blowing the inlet manifold gasket.

Mills looked on his way to a win before trying to overtake backmarkers one stepped out to overtake another forcing Mills high on the race track where he and the backmarker connected. With damage to the front end of his car Laidlaw took advantage and went on to win from Mills who held on for second, Rob Tatterson who was consistent all day, Broderick Stray & Ricky Low.

In Mini Sprints the Drouin Speedway Club were honouring the late Colin Lindell who was a former state champion in the division and the pilot of the Mighty Mouse race car. The Mighty Mouse Magic was the events name and the Victorian Champion Owen Milton took a blistering win in heat one before Stuart Ferguson charged away with the win in the second heat.

The final began with Ferguson from Bass and Milton alongside each other on the front row and Milton blasted off to the lead gradually stretching the lead out to a ten car length advantage on a drying race track. Whilst heading into turn three the car got further sideways than Milton had aimed for and the car backed itself into the wall and up and over on its roof.

With Milton out Ferguson broke away from Kevin Bomford and Owen Bulman driving onto victory with Peter Schnoor & Ben McCleary rounding out the top five.

The Junior Standard Saloon Track Championship got under way by holding the CB’s Bin Mob Cup with Rosedale racer Steven Danks starting where he left off the week before at Nyora Raceway with a win in heat one and then again in heat two. Bairnsdale Speedway Club’s Joshua Thomas got the better of Dank’s in the final heat taking the win in the final heat.

The final was once again a battle between Thomas (from Traralgon) & Danks and with a much better handling race car and Danks with a little front end problems, Thomas went on to take a great win over Danks, Tyson Cull the Victorian Champion, Michael Suckling (from Inverloch) & Bailey Perkins.

Speedway Sedan Australia Juniors in their 1200cc machines completed two heats and a final for the Jenkins Sheetmetal Junior Sedan Slam due to car count being low and visiting Geelong youngster Michael Skene a winner at Drouin last season took the win in both heats and the final ahead of Jack Van Breman. Back in the pack Ricky Cornwell & Josh Stewart had a great tussle throughout the day with Cornwell getting the better of the battle in the final. Skene beat Van Breman, Cornwell, Stewart & Casey Ingram who made a great recovery from a rollover earlier in racing.

Finally the VSC Sedan Track Championship with a combination of eligible Open Sedans and Sports Sedans put on a great show for the running of the JA Signs & Graphics Dash. Andrew Spink a former Pakenham resident took a great win in heat one against regular locals. Brendan Miller took the win in heat two and three.

With a big fan squad Joel Andrews put a great move on Miller during the final as Miller got caught out in a wet spot and Andrews got on past and held strong to win from Miller, Jaedn Alberni, Spink & Marcus Reddecliffe in the final.

Drouin Speedway Club are grateful to Allman’s Fencing & Southern Chassis Works for supporting the Division 2 Hot Rod Track Championship by ensuring all three rounds have a trophy sponsor.

MILLER & VUILLERMIN WIN IN FRONT OF HUGE DROUIN SPEEDWAY CROWD

A fantastic turn out at Drouin Speedway on Sunday the 10th of November were on hand for ‘Presidents Cup’ day with a large field of Crash and Bash cars & a strong field of Standard Saloons in the headline events with Pakenham race driver Damien Miller winning the Crash and Bash fifty lap final whilst Jacob Vuillermin got the better of his brother Patrick in round one of the Standard Saloon track championship series.

The visiting Crash and Bash drivers ran three heats a piece for nine in total before forming up for a fifty lap final. Craig McKendry, Jason McKendry & Lenny Bates won a relatively tame first round of heats.

The action hotted up a little more in the second round with drivers starting to push each other around a lot more. Brendan Miller, Damien Miller & Craig McKendry were the winners whilst some massive hitting from Dale Morrison & a bit of biff and barge from others started to liven up the crowd.

Jake Smith got a strong win in the first of the last round of heats with Craig McKendry & Brendan Miller rounding out the winners.

Through the heats Lenny Bates the Victorian Champion had his axle snap, Karl Haisma had rear end damage that needed to be fixed and Morrison’s race car was left with the front end learning the wrong way before crew members did enough to get him on track for the final.

With the crowd looking for action the Crash and Bash didn’t disappoint early in the piece with Morrison and Stanley connecting and ending up in the concrete wall just near the starts box, Gavin Dorain and David Parker were amongst finding the concrete wall attractive.

Strong drivers during the heats besides the winning drivers included Lennie Bonnici, Allan Treble & Adrian Brown and they were amongst the action early in the main race.

Craig McKendry a red hot favourite at the start of the final came undone early and found himself chasing from deep in the field to far back to challenge strong front runners such as Brendan Miller, Damien Miller, Bonnici and Haisma who had come from way back having started from eighteenth.

From around half race distance Jake Smith was left driving with three wheels after the left rear wheel came off his car and not long after Brendan Miller whilst second pulled infield with mechanical concerns.

The ‘Big Show’ Damien Miller stormed home with a fast finishing Haisma one lap behind in second and Bonnici two laps behind then strong runs from Daniel Jorgen and Fred Birrell picked them up the minor placings.

The Standard Saloons were competing in the first round of three for the season with enough drivers to run four heats with each driver competing in three of them. Patrick Vuillermin, Devlin Saunders. Patrick Vuillermin again before Jacob Vuillermin won the last of the four qualifying heats.

Victor Benson, David Rose & Leigh Gooding were consistent during heat racing putting them amongst the front runners for the fifteen lap final.

The field for the feature lined up with Patrick & Jacob Vuillermin, Benson, Leigh Gooding, Anne Gooding & Devlin Saunders the top six with Mark Miles, David Rose and Ben Randall amongst tough racers back in the field.

For Miles, mechanical issues plagued his whole day including the final for a terrible round one and a similar scenario for Randall accept in heat racing.

The battle of Rosedale Speedway Club’s Vuillermin brothers was won by Jacob who secured the lead early with brother in tow. Benson, Leigh Gooding, Rose & Anne Gooding had themselves some great tussles with positions changing amongst them a couple times whilst Benson was able to stitch up third place.

The Vuillermin’s ran to the finish in the same order with Jacob, Patrick ahead of Benson, Leigh Gooding and Rose to close out the top five and Anne Gooding securing the first female competitor to finish and was on the pace of the Rose.

In Junior Standards as the excitement builds towards a new series in Gippsland for their division, the best field in over two seasons lined up and regular winner AJ Lawrence took the victory in heat one ahead of the Victorian Champion Tyson Cull in a nose to tail battle most of the way.

Cull won the second heat from Ty Hutton in a brand new car and Lawrence whilst in the final heat Cull headed home Hutton and Michael Suckling.

The feature race got off to a rough start with AJ Lawrence ending up upside down between turn three and four. Cull lead Hutton and Suckling the most improved of the bunch was close behind in third place. Hutton got past Cull with a few laps to go and then on the very last lap Suckling was a little loose down the back straight as Hutton led Cull across the line to the chequered flag.

Suckling re-started however drove across the infield instead of the finish line leaving Rookie Jack Yeoman to cross the line and take third place in his debut race.

Josh Stewart & Casey Ingram were welcome Junior 1200 competitors whilst Jaedn Alberni was the pick of the bunch in Open Sedan racing.

DROUIN SPEEDWAY WINS FOR NEYLAN AND GOODING

Drouin Speedway kicked off on Sunday October 20th with a small but enthusiastic entry list of competitors who entertained the fans and shook off some race rust early in the season.

Wingless Sprints and Standard Saloons ran great features whilst the Vintage Super Modifieds entertained with some new additions to their field.

In ‘Polish N Shine’ Wingless Sprints Stampede a number of drivers showed they would be very competitive during the season including Gary Bowden, Peter Logue, Brett Neylan, Wayne Hurford and Robbie Johnson.

The three heats were entertaining to say the least with Bairnsdale racer Bowden winning the first heat from Johnson, Neylan, Logue & Hurford after Hurford was penalised for a restart infringement and dropped down the results.

Bianca Reeves held out Logue for most of heat two before he got the better of her and took the win in front of Neylan, Johnson & Bowden who was penalised by the steward for passing under the pole line.

In the final heat almost every driver copped a penalty for driving under the pole line as the division continued to be the only class all day having a problem with avoiding the turn four bollards. The end result was recorded as Hurford from Bowden, Neylan, Johnson & Logue.

The final was fantastic with the top cars close to each other and making passes throughout the race, in the end Neylan won his first Wingless Sprint final & the first ‘Polish N Shine Wingless Stampede’ ahead of Logue, Hurford, Bowden & Johnson.

In the ‘Drouin Waste Recyclers’ Standard Saloon Trader Derby the freshly retired (Working) couple of Leigh and Anne Gooding were very good through the three heats and final and were able to cross the finish line in the final ahead of Travis Evans in a small yet competitive field.

The Vintage Super Modifieds included early model Sprintcars up until the 80’s and were supported by ‘Latrobe Waste & Recycling’ for the day. In heat racing Graham Briggs and Mark Banks unfortunately had a coming together eliminating them for the rest of the day during their first heat race whilst Howard Colwell, the Noonan Boys, Robert Watson & Paul Woodgate thrilled the fans for the remainder of the day. STEWART WINS DIVISION 2 HOT RODS ZONE TITLE AT DROUIN SPEEDWAY

Drouin Speedway on Sunday May the 5th ended well for the ‘Stewart Racing’ team once gain this time with Daniel Stewart taking a win in the Victorian Speedway Council Gippsland Zone title for Division 2 Hot Rods on the same program the Vintage Sedans from ‘Ace of Spades’ Club and Mark Miles entertained.

In the Division 2 Hot Rods three heat races determined where the drivers would begin the feature race and the first heat was very entertaining with Ricky Mills and Stewart in a great battle catching up to a backmarker and both needing to decide who was going to pass on the pole line and who was going outside and as Mills would later say at presentation it was Stewart whom had the bigger ‘Cohuna’s’ and he went high and took the lead and the first heat win from Mill’s & Scotty Laidlaw.

In heat two Mills manage to lock in a win ahead of Stewart and Laidlaw before Laidlaw took a win in the third heat ahead of Stewart and Mills with those three drivers securing the top three in all three heat races.

Stewart began the final at the front of the field and had a terrible start, it looked like he was testing his steering as the green flag came out and was caught behind. Again in the feature another move requiring Stewart to run high paid off as Stewart ripped past Mills to take the win in a fifteen lap final. Laidlaw once again was third with Jeff Smith and Ricky Low rounding out the top five.
Stewart was kind in his words after the win at presentation. “The Drouin Club have done well today. It was a great track with passing room up high which the crowd witnessed. I thank Shane (brother) and my supporters and family. It was great to race with Ricky & Scotty today, it was clean and fast. I hope we as a Division come back here again soon.”

In Standard Saloons Pakenham’s Mark Miles seemed to have his car sorted out and despite a heat race over zealous move on Mitch Bowyer, Miles had a great finish to the day and took a win over Ben Randall who was having a ripper stoush with Nar Nar Goon resident Victor ‘The Inflictor’ Benson.

In Vintage Sedan’s a demonstration group of racers in machines from the fantastic 50’s & 60’s with names to boot it would be the ‘Aggravator’ who would lead to the finish line the ‘Gnome’ & ‘Burnout’. For those not knowing who these names are related to it was Peter Quaife, Bob Maloney & Billy O’Neill. A new edition Gippsland ‘hired gun’ Alan ‘The Monster’ McKinnon debuted in Col Chadwick’s ‘Herman’s Hearse’ and complete with coffin handles on the side of the race car, McKinnon had an absolute ball and finished strongly amongst the group.

In SSA Junior Sedans Donald Young from Langwarrin won all three heat races and the final with Shona Bent chasing in second place in all four races. Josh Stewart was much improved and finished the day in third place whilst Rochelle Hill & rookie of the day Zoe Young despite a little bingle in the feature race finished the final also. Zoe Young finished all three heats and the final in her first days racing which was an outstanding result. Donald Young was very strong in winning both he and Shona Bent look ready for the big events still to come for the season.

In Ladies Standard Saloon’s Melissa Tatterson and Karen Halliday were the strong performers of the day with Tatterson victorious in a shoot out feature for the two. Michael Suckling in Junior Standards further developed his race driving skills in readiness for next seasons potential VSC Juniors Gippsland Series & Russell Hill won the Open Sedan final ahead of Aaron Price and Michael Knight.

DROUIN SPEEDWAY AGAIN THIS SUNDAY MAY 5TH

Drouin Speedway is back again a couple weeks after the last meeting with great Sunday afternoon family entertainment for motoring enthusiasts at its Jindivick Road venue and the headline division for the day will be the Division 2 Hot Rods running for the Gippsland Zone title and the ‘Ace of Spades’ Vintage Sedan club as a great visiting category to the venue.

The Division 2 Hot Rods have a long history with Drouin Speedway and drivers like Andrew Galley and Richard Baker would like to get that relationship happening again for next season however to start the ball rolling the Gippsland Zone title has attracted Scott Laidlaw, Daniel Stewart, Alan Ward & Jason Seymour amongst the entries all from Gippsland. It should be great racing with around ten competitors trying to win the Zone title trophy that says they were first.

In the ‘Ace of Spades’ Vintage Sedans the fans love to see the Chev Slopers, Ford Slopers, 34 Fords and everything else they have in their show that are all sensational along with the drivers nicknames that include Intimidator, 8 Ball, Hollywood & the Gnome. They are a whole lot of great fun and folks who enjoy cars from the 1930s to the 1960s will enjoy the show.

Standard Saloons have had their numbers for this meeting increased with some Moe Speedway Club members joining in and amongst early nominations Victor Benson & Rob Tatterson should be at the front end of the field.

Ladies are programmed as are Open Sedans and both Junior Standard Saloons and SSA Junior 1200cc Sedans making sure everybody gets a go.

All the action starts at 11am with track gates opening around 8.30am so that you can get the best spot available at the picturesque venue. Adults $15, Family for 2 adults and two kids aged 12 to 16 is $40, aged and invalid pensioners $10 along with Kids 12 to 16 whilst kids under 12 are free with an adult.
