The Victorian Speedway Council Junior Standard Saloon Championship originally scheduled for Nyora Speedway on June 6th was run at Drouin Speedway on the same date after weather affected the Nyora complex. Drouin was delighted to have sixteen youngsters put on a great day of racing culminating in a terrific final over 20 laps distance.<\/p>\n
Raging favourite, on record at least was Michael Gorman who has a decorated career in 1200cc Junior Sedan racing and a couple of heat victories confirmed him as the driver to beat early in preceedings whilst Cameron Dike, Andrew Miles, Brody Chrystie, Anthony Brennan and John Scandrett all looked like they could challenge come the title race. Lining up in the final with Chrystie alongside, Gorman got the jump early in the feature with Gorman quickly establishing a lead. Local race driver Dike who himself had won a heat race earlier in the day was right in the lead group early until his charge was snuffed out and he headed infield with mechanical defects.<\/p>\n
Miles and Brennan who had come forward from deeper in the pack and Dylan Campton had their own stoush going on behind the leaders. A yellow light brought Gorman back to Chrystie as the last restart began and Chrystie was right on the money as he stuck to the Gorman bumper bar. Gorman started to suffer some minor mechanical issues and as the two tried to pass a backmarker Gorman ended up with an excursion through the infield mud whilst Chrystie held on and passed the slower car and roared across the line to victory with John Scandrett, Anthony Brennan, Gorman and Trevor Angus the top five.<\/p>\n
A delighted Chrystie spoke of being the new Victorian Champion. \u201cI would like to thank Northern Auto Recyclers for supplying me the race car and Drouin for making sure this event was run this season. I had a great race with Gorman and he was the guy to beat and I was in the right spot at the right time and I\u2019m wrapt. To the other finishers congratulations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Visiting category the Street Stocks with drivers from Warrnambool, Simpson, Geelong and even Swan Hill held four heat races with Shane Roycroft and Jason Braddock winning one heat each whilst South Australian champion Brad McClure won the last two heats and topped the qualifying points table. McClure and Shane Roycroft began at the front with the VT Commodore of McClure leading the borrowed Jason Hicks XF Falcon that Roycroft was steering. Whilst Roycroft was close on occasions McClure had the race under control and went on to win ahead of Shane Roycroft, Mark Topperwein, Braddock and John Roycroft.<\/p>\n
In Wingless Sprint action Warrnambool\u2019s Brad Warren won two of the three heats with David McKay taking victory in the third. Warren left the start line in a hurry come feature time and McKay hurried him early before Warren stamped his authority on the race. Warren made the long trip worthwhile to win the final with McKay, Adam Greenwood, Gary Bowden and Kris Lacey the top five.<\/p>\n
In Men\u2019s Standard Saloon results Victor Benson won the day with Jason Leonard and Wayne Nelson rounding out the top three and Anne Gooding won the ladies from Debbie Donaldson and Sonia Nelson. Visiting Vintage Super Modifieds also made an appearance with Graham Briggs, Ray Lavenders and Jim Duggan crossing the line as the top three.<\/p>\n
The Drouin Speedway season is over for 2010 and will return again in September.<\/p>\n
