MOULE WINS WINGLESS SPRINT GIPPSLAND CHALLENGE AT DROUIN

Drouin Speedway held its February race meeting on Sunday the 8th and along with all club classes two big features were scheduled to be completed with the Wingless Sprints in round four of their Gippsland Challenge & the Junior Standard Saloon drivers competing for their Victorian title, unfortunately as it stands, there is only one official winner & that was Tony Moule in the Wingless Sprints.

Overcast weather provided the best conditions for the venue early in the day before the sun kicked in when it reached the afternoon & making the most of the earlier conditions the Wingless Sprints competed in six heat races to set their field for the twenty lap feature event.

Adam Greenwood, Tony Moule, Travis Miller, Kelvin Toogood, Robert Stevenson & Miller again won the six heat events before lining up for the feature.

Moule who had won a Wingless final at Drouin already during the season & was virtually a local with business interests in Pakenham got the best of the start leaping to the front. Initially there was a good queue behind him of seven other drivers as splitting from the bottom half of the field. Lap after lap, Miller & Warrick Taylor were right with Moule working their way ahead with a little distance between them and the rest.

Stoppages due to spins from others & passing moves as Taylor slid back changed the front of the field up a little with Greenwood getting into the battle with Moule & Miller at times.

In the end Moule drove a tactically brilliant race to win from Miller, Greenwood, Paul Drew & Taylor in the Gippsland Challenge round.

The Victorian Standard Saloon Junior title was meant to be the main race of the day & that it was, right up until the feature event. The kids were excellent with six heats completed to that point of the day with club member Ally Morrison winning the very first heat, Donald Young the next the Dylan Pendlebury & Ty Hutton won the second round heats with Cooper Cappellari & Bailey Perkins the last two heats. Six winners in six heats showed how close the drivers were in abilities, it was on paper going to be a great final with Donald Young from the front of the field as top qualifier.

In the feature race, there were crashes, spins, great passing, panel rubbing & stewards’ penalties from the green flag right to the end which was shy of the twenty five scheduled laps. At this point the press has no further information to pass on accept to say that the stewards on the day declared the event with what they believed were official top five placings & that governing body wishes to hold a meeting in order to address various concerns & questions before announcing their position on the race.

Drouin spectators looking for a race result are asked to be patient & await outcomes from the Victorian Speedway Council.

In Open Standard Saloon racing Mark Miles from Pakenham defeated John Dike Jnr & Aaron Price to win the final after Dike, Miles, Travis Evans & Miles again won the four heat races contested.

Ricky Cornwall was a winner on points in the Speedway Sedan Australia Junior 1200cc Sedan division with Luke Dingley & Jack Ramsdale rounding out the top three whilst Peter Angus was too strong in the Division 2 Hot Rods for Daniel Angus & Ricky Low.

In Open VSC Sedans Mick Evans was too strong for Sam Williams & Joel Andrews with Tracey Ingram defeating Trish Dike & Tegan Bullard in Ladies Standard Saloons.

Racing returns to Drouin Speedway Club on March the 15th with the Victorian Crash & Bash state title & a feature for Open VSC Sedans.

A BIT OF THE OLD & A BIT OF THE NOW AT DROUIN SPEEDWAY THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday the 18th of January Drouin Speedway will once again be alive with the sound of the bump & grind and the hum of beautiful engines when the club returns for the first time since the Christmas break to entertain local motoring fans.

The VSC Classic Sprintcars & Vintage Super Modifieds are scheduled to compete on the program for fans who love open wheel racing whilst the Ace of Spades Club bring their old time sedans back to the popular venue for the old timers.

Whilst the vintage clubs entertain those in the older age bracket, the younger folk are not forgotten with the Open Standard Saloons, Ladies Standard Saloons, Junior Standard Saloons and Victorian Speedway Council Open Sedans where Division 2 Hot Rods, Sports Sedans & Unlimited Sedans can all run together.

The Vintage Sprintcars are not slow in getting around, they might be in chassis that are twenty five years old and they might have a couple rules to try and keep the drivers from wrecking other people’s cars, yet they still bring a smile to everybody’s faces as they get around and make some noise.
Likewise the Ace of Spades sedans, they use every inch of the race track & don’t even look like hitting the wall. Chev Slopers vs. T Model Fords, it’s a great spectacle.

The Open Sedans have nominations to hand from local hot shot Mick Evans through to Geelong & Moama registered competitors Shannon Burke & Joshua Brown throw in the ready to go regulars and it could be quite a good little battle for the Opens.

In Standard Saloons the action has been great this season with plenty of variation in the winners list. Morwell’s Shane Stewart gets back behind the wheel this weekend and he will be mixing it up with Mark Miles, Aaron Price & Ballarat racer Tim Hutchinson who is running strongly in the Victorian state aggregate so far this year.

The Ladies Standard Saloons last meeting continued on their great momentum this year with the field this meeting including the return of the current Victorian Champion Anne Gooding to do battle with Tegan Bullard & rookie Stephanie Evans who finished third in her first ever final last meeting. They are part of a good field of nominated racers that include Trish Dike who just might show everybody why she has been known as one of Gippsland’s best Speedway Lady racers.

In the Junior Standard Saloon division preparations for the coming Victorian title at Drouin Speedway has resulted in Cooper Cappellari coming all the way from the North East of Victoria to compete against Ally Morrison, Sean McNeil, Michael Suckling & the extremely hard to beat Ty Hutton. It’s tough to pick a winner in this race on Sunday no matter who you support.

MOULE, JENKINS WIN AT DROUIN, RANDALL & HUTTON ALSO IN IMPORTANT EVENTS

Drouin Speedway came alive for the last time before Christmas & under a beautiful blue sky, visiting divisions Wingless Sprints & SDAV Hot Rods joined club divisions for all levels of Standard Saloons along with VSC Open Sedans with Tony Moule driving a Wingless Sprint owned Drouin Speedway Club President Larry Evans taking a win in his division whilst Phil Jenkins won the ‘Legends Cup’ for the Hot Rods that was postponed from last season.

In Standard Saloon racing Tegan Bullard won the Ladies, Ty Hutton the Junior Standard Saloons & Ben Randall the Open Standard Saloons finals & Scott Angus came out on top in the Open Sedans.

The SDAV Hot Rod Club were running for series points & the before mentioned ‘Legends Cup’ & in three heat races wins went to Phil Jenkins, Shannon Meakins & Glenn Lawless. State Champion Dean West a local driver in Gippsland had a less than glorious start to the day muffing up the first heat, yet will be satisfied with eventually finishing behind a very determined Jenkins & young gun Meakins to finish in third place ahead of Allan Luckett & Lawless.

Wingless Sprints competed for points towards their state aggregate with Moule winning heat one and two & keen to make it three from three before he was penalised by stewards for driving incidents. Brett Kuypers was out from & numerous stoppages resulted in officials declaring the race and Kuypers the winner. Moule then led from start to finish in the final event to lead to the finish Troy Carey from Tullamore NSW, Wayne Hurford, Kuypers & Tearni Perkins.

The Standard Saloon track championship round was a welcome return for Ben Randall who went on to win two of his three heats with Bunyip’s Jeff Blencowe & Mark Miles from Pakenham winning the other two. Randall then led start to finish in the feature event to defeat Miles, Cory Horter, John Dike Jnr & Matt Nelson.

With some extra cars available to compete from other Victorian Speedway Council divisions the Unlimited Sedans became VSC Open Sedans for race day. Mick Evans took the first heat win with Daniel & then Scott Angus wrapping up the three heats. Scott Angus then jumped away at the start of the final & Daniel Angus got the better of Evans for some time before getting by into second to start the chase of Scott Angus. On the very last lap Evans was right behind & just couldn’t pass, Scott Angus, Evans, Daniel Angus, Eric Miles and Rob Tatterson from Trafalgar where the top five finishers.

Junior Standard Saloon car numbers were once again strong with the Victorian title for the division at the venue after Christmas. Ty Hutton, Bailey Perkins & Hutton a second time were winners of the heats. Some drama in the final with some of the stronger competitors Ally Morrison & Ambah Fythe coming unstuck whilst in the top five left Hutton to win ahead of Perkins & Courtney Meakins.

The Ladies’ racing began well for Tracey Ingram who took a win in the first heat in a strong battle with Sonia Nelson before Tegan Bullard took a win in the next two heats. Bullard got the best start in the final & Ingram found herself on the wrong end of the steward’s decision ending with a black flag & disqualification from the race before Bullard took the win from Nelson & rookie driver Steph Evans & Vanessa Coleman. Rookie racer Amanda Burrows had her first big crash against the back straight wall eliminating her from racing.

Standard Saloons were the feature event of the day and held four heats to determine starting positions in the final. Chris Stewart won the first heat getting the better of Dale Morrison then the second when he led hom Mark Miles. Jason Leonard won the only heat the Victorian Champion wasnt scheduled to race in before Stewart wrapt up a three from three result in qualifying by winning the last qualifying heat.

The final runs eight laps one way, then eight the reverse way before turning around once more to run twelve laps for the money. Stewart was never in trouble in a dominate display with various second placed drivers before the race settled in the closing laps with Miles striking difficulty and Hill capatilising to take second in front of Daniel Stewart then came Miles in his ailing Falcon & Travis Evans completing the top five finishers.

In Mini Sprints Owen Bulman, May & May again won the three heats with May extremely quick in lap times dropping from 17.8 second laps in the first heat to 16.1s by the time the third heat got done. May went on to win the feature from Bulman, Jason Lynn, Luke Hickson & Darren Schnoor.

Unlimited Sedans were competing for their track championship points in round one & visiting Nyora club driver Marcus Reddecliffe in a Cortina powered by a 250 crossflow took a win in the first heat before Shannon Burke in a 305ci Injected SL engined Commodore won the second & third heats putting himself on the front row of the final where he was unable to capatilise and take a victory after Brad Warren in a 265ci Hemi powered Centura made an outside pass inbetween turn three and four to take the lead and storm on to a win from Burke, Des Birkin, Daniel Wanders & Rob Bushell.

MAC TIME AT DROUIN SPEEDWAY WITH JASON MCKENDRY WINNING CRASH & BASH

Drouin Speedway Club kicked off its season with a great day of action involving all club divisions, visiting vintage clubs & the Crash & Bash association providing entertainment that kept everybody happy.

The Crash & Bash division pulls a great crowd from the eastern suburb areas into the little West Gippsland venue & nine heat races were ran to determine the starting order for the forty lap final.

Ryan Brown, Brad Warren, Jason McKendry, Daniel Jorgen, McKendry again, Peter Cox, Lenny Bates, Frank Sinclair & Jake Young all won the heat races that determined that the McKendry brothers of Jason & Craig would start on the front row ahead Bates & the field.

In the final Jason McKendry & Bates at various stages of the race held the lead with the other chasing. Yellow light stoppages for cars that were stuck in awkward places on the track probably caused more havoc at resumption as the leaders had to round up groups of back markers rather than a spread out field & Bates towards the end of the race whilst leading got stuck in a tangle entertaining the dog leg and McKendry pounced & Bates just couldn’t recover to get back in the hunt.

Jason McKendry won from Bates, Finley Burke, Sinclair & Cox.

In the Standard Saloon Track Championship first round Dale Morrison from the suburb of Officer easily accounted for the rest of the field defeating good friend Brad Hill by around half a lap distance in the final with John Watson, Jeff Blencowe & Travis Evans rounding out the top five.

The Junior Standard Saloons were also very entertaining with six youngsters giving it their best. Three of them were much quicker than the rest & each took turns at leading races during the day with Traralgon’s Adrian Lawrence coming out ahead of Michael Suckling & Ally Morrison in the final with Sean McNeil, Jack Yeomans & Gemma Laidlaw completing the result in fourth to sixth.

The Unlimited Sedans had some good competition & with indications that other drivers are prepared to come to Drouin from next race meeting the competition could get a little stiffer. Wayne Nelson from Woori Yallock was too strong for Shannon Burke & Tim Hutchinson in the final.

Tegan Bullard defeated Bridgette Morgan in the Ladies Standards in a series of match races between the two & the Vintage Super Modifieds Paul Woodgate was the stand out driver in their division on the day with Glen Barnett & Rob Watson also driving their machines well as did Victor O’Neill, Bob Moloney & Bill O’Neill in the Ace of Spades vintage sedans club.

Drouin Speedway next is open on November the 9th with racing from 11am featuring the VSC Unlimited Sedans Track Championship first round, Eliminator Cup for Standard Saloons and Gippsland Zone title for Mini Sprints.

NELSON WINS WARRAGUL AUTOBARN TOP GUN AS DROUINS SPEEDWAY SEASON WINDS UP

The Drouin Speedway Club wound up their race season on the weekend with the running of the ‘Warragul Autobarn’ VSC Sedans Top Gun, the Mini Sprints Gold Cup final round and the closing out of all the club divisions track championship series & Darren Nelson from Werribee took out the ‘Top Gun’ event whilst series victories in the Standard Saloons & Division 2 Hot Rods were secured by Jacob Vuillermin and Ricky Mills respectively.

The VSC Sedan event was a cracking final between Nelson and Mick Evans. They led the whole race whilst Joel Andrews was clear in third place. Nelson had the early race lead with Evans right up high on the race track trying to drive around Nelson. Nelson washed high in turn two and lost speed and Evans pounced punching down the inside to take the lead. It was soon to be Evans mistake that cost him the lead in the closing laps and Nelson took the win from Evans and Labertouche’s Andrews. Earlier Nelson took two heat wins and Evans one.

Nelson commented on his win. “Firstly thank you to Warragul Autobarn for supporting motoring in their local community. I would like to thank Drouin for supporting VSC racing and my crew and everybody at Nelo Racing. I enjoyed the race with Mick, who would have fought you could drive up that high at Drouin. Well done to the volunteers at the track for the work they have done.”

Drouin Standard Saloons club member Leigh Gooding from Trafalgar had the best day taking the feature race win in style as he defeated Jacob Vuillermin, Mark Miles, Patrick Vuillermin and Bunyip racer Jeff Blencowe in the final round of the Standard Saloon track championship. Earlier Patrick Vuillermin, Miles, Gooding, Vuillermin again, Gooding again & Jacob Vuillermin won the qualifying heats.

In the Mini Sprints Gold Cup round local racer Matt Parsons (a Warragul resident) won the feature after a great scrap with Dave May. Both drivers had time in the lead before Parsons took the win, Third was Kevin Bomford followed by Jason Lynn & Danny Milton. Parsons, Bomford & May all took heat race wins.

Great racing in the Division Two Hot Rod’s resulted in Scotty Laidlaw winning the final from Ricky Mills and Broderick Stray after Mills had earlier secured the track championship winning two out of the three heats with Laidlaw winning the other.

In Junior Sedan racing the 1200cc division was won by Jack Van Breman from Ricky Cornwall & Kasey Ingram whilst in the Junior Standard Saloon division Steve Danks took the win ahead of Tyson Cull & Adrian Lawrence.

The Mini Sprints return & Stuart Ferguson who won last time they raced at Drouin will be tough to beat however Kevin Bomford & Matt Parsons will be keen to end the season with a win under their belts.
Junior Sedans and a Ladies Standard Saloon zone title are planned depending on nominations.
