MEAKINS & PENDLEBURY WIN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AT DROUIN SPEEDWAY

Two Victorian Champions were decided at the recent Drouin Speedway clubs April show when Yallourn teenager Dylan Pendlebury became the new Victorian Junior Standard Saloon title holder & Geelong based racer Shannon Meakins laid claim to the Speedway Drivers Association of Victoria Hot Rod title during a great days racing at the West Gippsland venue.

The Junior Sedan title was the first decided as it was a re-run of the attempted title event in February at the same venue which due to circumstances beyond the control of the drivers, had to be restarted.

Pole position driver Donald Young as he did in the first run of the event got a great start and led the race early.

Moves were coming through the field with Pendlebury from the distance from the lead passing others down the back of the line. Pendlebury eventually made the most of traffic conditions choosing wisely as the lead drivers came through backmarkers & passed Young into the lead, Liam Powell capitalised and Young stabilised back in third spot.

Pendlebury took out his first Victorian title from Liam Powell, Young, Toongabbie’s Ty Hutton & Drouin club member Ally Morrison the top placed female in the field.

After heat racing, Kali Hovey led all entrants to be the top qualifier in the SDAV Rods in front of Allan Luckett, Phil Jenkins, Meakins, Russell Hovey, Stan Marco, Neil Sixtus & Glenn.

A twenty lap final to determine the new Victorian title holder began with Luckett leading lap one from Kali Hovey, Meakins, Jenkins & Marco before a engine blow eliminated Kali Hovey from the race on lap two giving the second place to Meakins ahead of Jenkins.

Eleven laps into the race Luckett was passing Lawless and by lap fourteen Sixtus as well whilst still leading Meakins & Jenkins.

On lap eighteen Russell Hovey retired infield with damage to his car during a racing incident whilst trying to get past the backmarkers again seen Luckett take the wrong line & Meakins pounced as he made a move into the lead on lap nineteen with Jenkins back in third.

Meakins held firm to take the number one result from Luckett, Jenkins, Marco, Sixtus & Lawless.

In other finals on the day the Open VSC Sedans final was won by Andrew Jordan whom had never raced at Drouin prior to showing up for this event. He defeated Alan McKinnon & Daniel Angus whilst Mark Miles who has had a great season at Drouin Speedway continued on his winning form when he beat Aaron Price & Travis Evans in Open Standard Saloons with Tegan Bullard taking victory in the Ladies Standard Saloons in front of Anne Gooding & rookie racer this season Amanda Burrows.

Junior Standard Saloons also competed in heats and a final for this race date after they completed their state title feature & Pendlebury was able to double up when he won the Junior final ahead of Bairnsdale’s Matthew Bowers, Ally Morrison, Rosedale racer Michael Hardy & Jack Wharton.
